about

This one strayed very little from the pre-demo improv, which I had actually made during the production of (and almost included in) my previous LP, 'How I Learned to Love The Bomb'. I’m pretty sure the melody came first, when I was fiddling with the Elka electric organ, the one my father and I had plucked off the sidewalk, whose rat poops we dutifully swept out.

Sometime after that, I tried forcing myself to be more productive, to be a “real musician”, so I screwed around with some unwieldy phone apps on the train to work and I created this foundational rhythm. This rhythm became the pre-demo, "Leashes". (I'll probably post it somewhere, someday, because it still impresses me.) I was definitely channeling “Running Up That Hill” (Kate Bush) / “The Keepers” (Santigold).

I wanted to write about a specific feeling which I think is prevalent in the queer community, this sense of chasing someone who's chasing someone else, or is still caught up on someone else, or who is perhaps absent in some capacity because some part of them is embittered by a former lover, or there's just this chasmic loneliness inside them that they refuse to acknowledge, so you're sat there like a scarecrow, desperately trying to be enough for them, but you're never enough, you were never going to be enough, because that hole is not about you...

A farcical network of disappointment and emotional abuse in which I found myself not just the victim but also the perpetrator. This song sort of mirrors the whole arc of 'The Sabotage Montage'. The lesson here is the same one at the very end.

lyrics

(You)
You made me wait up in the rain
I’m always bathing in the blame
So how does it feel, huh?
Tugging on my leash
Oh

I’m tracing all your moves and plays
Pacing every night, stuck in place
So how does it feel, uh?
Tugging on my leash

I can never sweep you off your feet
Fleeting first impressions you believe
So how does it feel?
Tugging on my leash
Oh

I forever fuck up all I say
Can’t we lay this down before the day?
‘Cause I know how it feels
Hanging on the leash

I’m too young to take you anywhere
You’re too old to ever fucking care
I know how this feels
Dangled on the leash

I will never stop trying to change, try to change, try to
Failing all the rules of this old game, your old game
‘Cause I know how it feels, yeah
Dangled on the leash

Oh, all the way
All the way
All the way
Oh, all the way
All the way
All the way

(You know it feels
I know it feels
You know it feels
I know it feels like
You know it feels
I know it feels
You know it feels
I know it feels like
You know it feels
I know it feels
You know it feels
I know it feels...)

You made me wait up in the rain
I know he left you in a hurricane
Yeah, you know how it feels, baby
So I know how it heals, too
Now I do
